Project Export

The MASRC has a critical role in a project titled “Towards the Eradication of Health Disparities in Arizona Hispanic and American Indian Populations” and often referred to as PROJECT EXPORT. EXPORT (Excellence in Partnerships for Community Outreach, Research on Disparities in Health and Training) is a large-scale University-community collaborative effort lead by the Mel and Enid Zuckerman Arizona College of Public Health. This project was created to fight substance abuse and diabetes in minority communities and is funded for $6 million over five years (2003-2008) by the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NCMHD), which is part of National Institutes of Health (NIH). Southern Tucson is one of the communities where the elimination of health disparities due to diabetes and substance use is of central focus for this project.

MASRC faculty, staff and graduate student fellows are important contributors to this project. Center Director Antonio Estrada is the Co-Principal Investigator for the overall project; Dr. Scott Carvajal is the Co-Investigator and Director of the Substance Abuse Research Component Core; and Dr. Andrea Romero is the Principal Investigator of a peer review-selected Pilot Research Project focused on substance abuse prevention in Latina and Latino adolescents.

Community members, students and researchers interested in learning more about PROJECT EXPORT and its opportunities should go to its primary website: http://www.publichealth.arizona.edu/projectexport/
