30 Units Total

The general goal of the curriculum is to provide a core course of study in contemporary Mexican American public policy issues, and to train students in the use of qualitative and quantitative research methods. Students can further develop their areas of emphasis from two thematic strands: Social History & Cultural Studies and Social Justice & Applied Public Policy. In conjunction with the UA National Center for Interpretation, the MASRC also offers a separate concentration in Translation and Interpretation Studies.

Thirty (30) units are required for the major: 18 units from six required courses; 12 units from the two thematic strands (subject concentrations). The minor in MAS has a total of 21 units: 12 units from four required courses, and 9 units from the two subject concentrations. The MAS undergraduate course listing is as follows:

(Majors must demonstrate proficiency in Spanish by testing out at a second-year equivalent, or by completing two years of course work. Students should choose MATH 105 or a more advanced mathematics course to complete their mathematics requirement.)

The Minor in Mexican American Studies

21 Units Total

Twenty-one units are required for the minor: 12 units from four required courses; and 9 units from the two thematic strands.

(A supportive minor in Mexican American Studies to augment areas or majors is encouraged.)
